The name of the arrested person is Md. Farid (37). He is a resident of the Sahapara area. The name of the victim journalist is Anwar Hossain (35). He works as a staff reporter for the Gazipur newspaper Alo of the Daily Bangladesh.
He was attacked last Wednesday afternoon while collecting news about extortion in the Sahapara area. A video of the incident went viral on social media. Later, the mother of the injured journalist filed a written complaint with the police station. Later, it was recorded as a case.
According to the police and the complaint sources of the case, Md. Farid and his associates in the Sahapara area of the city collect extortion of 30 to 40 taka from each auto-rickshaw in the area every day. When Anwar went to collect news about this incident, the accused came to know about it. Later, 15 to 16 people attacked him with the help of local extortionists. Then, with the intention of killing him, they took him behind a tea shop and hit him on the head with a brick, causing bloody injuries. At that time, they snatched two mobile phones and 26,250 taka. Police and local people rescued him and admitted him to Gazipur Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmed Medical College Hospital. Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Gazipur Sadar Police Station Md. Mehedi Hasan said that one person involved in the incident of beating the journalist has been arrested. The operation is ongoing to arrest the others.
