Young man jumped into pond after stabbing police: Police in briefing

Police have given a briefing on the recovery of the body of a youth who entered the Saghata police station in Gaibandha and attacked the police. Gaibandha Additional Superintendent of Police (A Circle) Bidhoor Kumar Kundu gave a briefing at the Saghata police station premises around 2:30 pm on Friday.

Earlier, on Thursday, around 10 pm, a youth came to the police station and tried to snatch a police constable’s gun during an argument. When other police members stopped him, he stabbed an ASI and fled. Later this morning, the fire service recovered his body from a pond next to the police station.

Police said in the briefing that the man’s name is Siju Mia (25). He lives in Baguria village in Gaibandha Sadar upazila. He is the son of Dulal Mia, a daily wage laborer in that village. Police officer Bidhoor Kumar Kundu said that the youth came to the Saghata police station at 8:40 pm on Thursday. He wants to file a general diary (GD) stating that a mobile phone has been lost. The duty officer asked him for his mobile phone number, IMEI number and when, where and when it was lost. Although Siju Mia was in front of the officer at the police station for 15 to 20 minutes, he could not provide any information regarding this. Then he left the police station at around 9 pm.

The briefing said that later at around 9:56 pm, Siju Mia came to the police station again with a knife. Then he hit the constable on duty, Sirajul Islam, and tried to snatch the weapon from him. The two entered the officer’s room while they were in a scuffle. Siju Mia tried to attack the police with the knife in his hand. At this time, an ASI was injured. At this time, Siju Mia tried to hit a few more people. At around 9:57 pm, he ran and jumped into a nearby pond. The police station and local residents tried to search for him there. The matter was also reported to the fire service. Rescue work could not be started at night due to the depth of the pond.

Police officer Bidhoor Kumar Kundu said that when the fire service started the rescue operation this morning, Siju Mia’s body was recovered from the pond. Later, his name, address and identity were known.

Meanwhile, Shah Alam (45), a tea shop owner of Baguria village, rushed to Saghata police station after hearing about the death of his brother-in-law from the people. He said that Siju’s house is a few kilometers away, but they don’t know why he went to Saghata police station. He didn’t even tell his parents before going to the police station. They got the news of his death this morning. He said that Siju has passed HSC. He is learning computer work in Gaibandha. He is a decent boy, he used to pray five times a day. No one in the area can say anything against him. He wants a proper investigation into the incident and justice.

Meanwhile, the body was sent to Gaibandha General Hospital morgue for autopsy in the afternoon. Saghata police station officer-in-charge (OC) Badsha Alam said on his mobile phone that the cause of death will not be known until the autopsy report is received. Legal action is being taken in this incident. The incident is being investigated.
