World Bank Vice President arrives on four-day visit

The new Vice President for the South Asia Region of the World Bank, Johannes Jatt, arrived in Dhaka on Saturday. He is on a four-day visit. During the visit, he will meet with the Interim Government’s Chief Advisor, Financial Advisor, Governor of Bangladesh Bank, government policymakers and representatives of the private sector.

Johannes Jatt assumes office as Vice President for the South Asia Region on July 1, 2025. Bangladesh is his first official visit in his new role. Earlier, he served as the World Bank’s Country Director in Bangladesh from 2013 to 2015. Johannes Jatt said in a press release, “I have developed a friendship with the people of this country, which is deeply ingrained in my mind. I have always been fascinated by the resilience, creativity and determination of the people of Bangladesh to build a better future for their children. I came to Bangladesh again with interest to see with my own eyes what extraordinary changes have taken place in the last 10 years. He added, “The World Bank is committed to sustaining sustainable and inclusive growth in Bangladesh and creating more and better jobs for the nearly two million young people who enter the labor market each year.” Johannes Jatt, a Dutch national, joined the World Bank in 1999. He most recently served as the World Bank’s Country Director in Brazil. Before that, he was Director of the Operational Policy and Country Services Department. He has served as Country Director in Turkey, Comoros, Eritrea, Kenya, Rwanda, Seychelles, and Somalia.
