Ukrainians are angry about the Trump-Putin meeting, but why?

Pavlo Nebrov, a resident of the northeastern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv, stayed up until midnight on Friday to watch a press conference between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. The venue for the press conference was thousands of kilometers from Kharkiv.

Ukrainians are angry about the Trump-Putin meeting, but why?

More than three years after Russia invaded Ukraine, Pavlo’s homeland, the US and Russian leaders met in Alaska, the United States. However, the two leaders could not bring any success from the meeting. And the red carpet reception given to Putin was seen as a clear victory for Kharkiv, which has been under heavy Russian attack throughout the war.

Pavlo, a 38-year-old theater manager, said, “I saw the result as I expected. I think it is a huge diplomatic victory for Putin. He has fully regained his legitimacy.” The Western world has been avoiding Putin since his invasion of Ukraine in 2022. But Trump broke that trend by inviting Putin to the United States.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was not invited to the Alaskan meeting, which he described as a “personal victory” for Putin.

Pavlo is not only angry about the meeting with Ukraine for external reasons, but also considers the meeting a waste of time. Pavlo said, “It was a pointless meeting. The problems related to Ukraine should be solved in Ukraine itself — with the participation of the Ukrainians, with the participation of the country’s president.”

After the meeting, Trump briefed European leaders and Zelensky on the discussions. Zelensky said he would meet Trump in Washington on Monday.
