Two top Sylhet BNP leaders deny involvement in white stone looting

Metropolitan BNP acting president Rezaul Hasan Kayes Lodi and general secretary Imdad Hossain Chowdhury have denied the allegations of involvement in the white stone looting in Sylhet. They denied the allegations against them in an emergency press conference held at a restaurant in the city’s Barutkhana area on Wednesday afternoon.

Earlier today, a newspaper report was published citing the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) citing the involvement of this leader in the stone looting. The report mentioned that the ACC has found the names of 42 political leaders involved in the looting during its investigation into the white stone looting. The two BNP leaders are among them. At the press conference, the two BNP leaders said that the news titled ‘ACC investigation: 42 people involved in the white stone theft in Sylhet’ has completely falsely and baselessly included their names in the list of looters without any evidence, citing ACC sources and intentionally adding them to the list of looters. They are politically and socially humiliated by this and are surprised by the publication of such unrealistic fictional news.

Rezaul Hasan Qays Lodi presented a written statement on behalf of the two leaders. He said, “We challenge that there is no question of direct or indirect involvement in this misdeed in any way. Those who have provided this false information must prove it or apologize unconditionally for providing such false and misleading news.” He also said in the press conference that they have started preparing to take legal action for such “baseless, fictional and spreading rumors.”

Qays Lodi also said, “In fact, for the past 15 years, looting has been going on in this area (Kompaniganj) with the connivance of the then occupying Awami League and with the direct support of the administration, which is still ongoing. Such an incident of implicating the metropolitan BNP without providing any factual information in the published news and without any evidence reminds us of the bad journalism and bad culture of the past decade and a half.’ At that time, they rejected the published news and demanded that proper evidence be presented to the countrymen in support of the news.
