Trump takes a swipe at Khamenei, threatens to attack Iran again
Trump has vented his anger at Iran’s supreme leader in a post on his social media account Truth Social. The US president claimed that he saved Khamenei from a “violent and humiliating” death. Trump also wrote that Khamenei had told a “blatant and foolish” lie when he claimed Iran’s “victory” in a speech the previous day.
A ceasefire between Iran and Israel came into effect at the beginning of last week. Earlier, the US bombed Iran’s Fordow, Natanz and Isfahan nuclear facilities. In response, Tehran launched a counter-missile attack on a US military base in Qatar.
Tehran has essentially slapped Washington in the face by retaliating for the attack on three of its nuclear facilities by attacking US bases in Qatar, Khamenei said in his first video message since the 12-day ceasefire. In response, Trump tweeted on Friday that he had asked Israel to refrain from doing “the ultimate thing.”
In the post, Trump wrote to Khamenei, “His country is destroyed. His three dangerous nuclear facilities are also destroyed. I also knew where he was taking refuge. I did not end his life with Israel and the most powerful US military in the world.”
There has been a heated debate about whether the US attack destroyed Iran’s nuclear capabilities. There is a huge gap between the Trump administration’s portrayal of the results of these attacks and the leaked US intelligence report. The intelligence report suggests that the US attack only set back Iran’s nuclear program by a few months.
