Meanwhile, Trump’s decision to lift sanctions is expected to open the way for investment in Syria.
The US Treasury Department said in a statement that Trump’s order on Monday lifted sanctions on institutions important to Syria’s development, government operations, and the reconstruction of the country’s social structure.
The sanctions program imposed by the previous Syrian government for various reasons, including human rights violations, hindered the country’s reconstruction efforts. The Syrian economy was almost destroyed under Bashar al-Assad’s rule due to various international sanctions.
During his visit to the Middle East in May, Trump promised to lift sanctions on Syria.
In a statement yesterday, Trump said, “The United States supports a Syria that is stable, united, and at peace within the country and with its neighbors. A united Syria, which will not be a safe haven for terrorist organizations, will ensure the security of its religious and ethnic minorities, and will support regional security and prosperity.
However, while sanctions on Syria are lifted, the US administration has said that sanctions related to Syria will remain in place on Bashar al-Assad and his allies, ISIL (ISIS), Iran and its allies.
