Trump imposes 35 percent tariff on Canada
In a letter posted on his social media account Truth Social on Thursday, Trump announced the imposition of the additional tariff on Canada.
In the letter, Trump wrote to Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney that if Canada takes retaliatory measures against the tariff, the tariff rate will be increased further.
It was believed that the relationship between Trump and Mark Carney has warmed up somewhat recently. On May 6, Carney met with Trump at the White House. Then, they also had cordial discussions at the G7 summit held in Canada last month.
Since last Monday, Trump has sent letters regarding the imposition of tariffs to the leaders of more than 20 countries.
In an interview with NBC News yesterday, Trump said, “We don’t need to send letters to all countries. We’re setting our tariffs. The countries that haven’t received the letters yet, we’ll also be setting them up for 15 to 20 percent tariffs, we’ll be setting that now.”
