They repaired the broken bridge and built a wooden bridge themselves.
It was found that it is located in Banshighata of Sreepur Municipality, which is known as the industrial area of Sreepur, Gazipur. Everyone knows the bridge area as Banshighata. This bridge connects Ward No. 9 and Ward No. 7 of the municipality. The renovation of the 10-year-old bridge, which is 50 feet long, began last Friday. 50-60 people from the village worked together for two days and completed the construction of the wooden bridge on Saturday night.
It was learned from talking to the locals that there are 5 factories on both sides of the bridge. At least a thousand workers and ordinary people use it daily. Suddenly, two months ago, an important part of the bridge made of bamboo broke. This created a risk and hardship in movement. Despite the suffering for so long, the villagers drew the attention of the concerned authorities, but no one came forward to repair it. Then, local initiatives were taken.
Local resident and businessman Qayyum Sarkar said that so many people had to wade through rotten and smelly water to go to work. So they took the initiative to repair it themselves. He donated a large amount of wood from his wood-cutting mill for the repair work.
Md. Shafiqul Islam, a worker, said that the workers in that area were in extreme distress while going to the factory, returning home during lunch breaks, and after holidays. The suffering has been alleviated by the renovation and construction of a wooden bridge there.
Local environmental activist Khorshed Alam said that the construction of a wooden bridge there was completed on Saturday night. Workers and villagers have been using it since Sunday morning. No problem is too big for the unity and generosity of the people. However, the concerned municipal authorities should have come forward to reduce the suffering of the people here.
