Information and Broadcasting Advisor Md. Mahfuz Alam said that there will be no restrictions on the media in this year’s national elections. However, journalists will have to play a cautious, aware and responsible role before, during and after the elections.

The information advisor said this in his speech at a view-sharing meeting on the role of the media during elections on Sunday. The meeting was held at the DFP meeting room at the Information Building in Dhaka. Stressing the importance of creating a free flow of information during elections, Mahfuz Alam said that the people should be informed about what is happening in the election field, what kind of irregularities and violence is happening. Mentioning that there were restrictions on the media during elections in the past, he said that there will be no restrictions on the media in this year’s national elections.
Mahfuz Alam said that a significant number of young people will exercise their right to vote this time. The media has an important role in building trust among young voters. Bangladeshis living abroad will vote in this year’s elections. The media should work to reach the diaspora about the role of each political party.
The Information Advisor assured that the government will take all measures to ensure that the people do not become victims of violence in the next national elections. He urged the media to play a role in this regard.
In view of the various opinions of the journalists, the advisor said that the government will give utmost importance to the safety of journalists during the elections. The advisor also assured that if there are any inconsistent restrictions in the collection of election news, necessary initiatives will be taken after reviewing them.
Secretary of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting Mahbuba Farzana, Additional Secretary Md. Kausar Ahmed, heads of various departments and organizations under the ministry, and editors, publishers and journalists of various media outlets were present at the meeting. The meeting was moderated by Chief Information Officer Md. Nizamul Kabir.
