Show cause notices issued to 10 CUET students over ragging allegations
The university authorities have issued show cause notices (show cause) to 10 students on charges of ragging at Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (CUET). On Monday, 10 separate notices signed by the member secretary of the university’s Students’ Discipline Committee and director of the Student Welfare Department, Md. Mahbubul Alam, were sent to the accused students.

The students who received the show cause notices are students of the 2023-24 academic year. They are accused of harassing (ragging) 9 students of the 2024-25 academic year. According to university administration sources, the principal and assistant principals of Muktijoddha Hall visited the hall at 1 am on August 13. At that time, the 10 accused students were harassing 9 students of the 2024-25 academic year in a room. The principal and assistant principals saw the matter.
The show cause notices said that such behavior is against the university’s disciplinary code. Therefore, the notice asks why one or more disciplinary measures will not be taken against them as per the university’s disciplinary code. They are asked to appear in person at the Student Welfare Department by September 3 and respond to the notice.
Director of the University’s Student Welfare Department Md. Mahbubul Alam told Prothom Alo that based on the complaints of the hall principals, the students have been asked to initially show cause. Further action will be taken after the reply to the show cause and a personal hearing.
Mahbubul Alam also said that it is necessary to cooperate with the new students after they arrive. The incident of ragging with them there is inhuman. The university administration is taking a strict stand against ragging. Anyone found involved in it will be taken against him under the university law.
