Sheikh Hasina orders ‘no treatment, no release’ at hospital, Imran overhears

Abdullah Al Imran gave a statement as the second witness in the case at the International Crimes Tribunal-1 on Monday. In his statement, he said that Sheikh Hasina had ordered ‘no treatment, no release’ while visiting the National Orthopaedic Hospital and Rehabilitation Center (Pangu Hospital) in Agargaon in the capital. Al Imran said that he had heard this order.

In his statement, student Abdullah Al Imran said that he was shot in the Bijoynagar water tank area of the capital on July 19 last year. He was shot below his left knee. Abdullah Al Imran said that he was undergoing treatment at the National Orthopaedic Hospital and Rehabilitation Center (Pangu Hospital) in Agargaon in the capital. On July 26 or 27 last year, around 9-10 am, the then Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina visited the Pangu Hospital. At one point, Sheikh Hasina approached him. He addressed Sheikh Hasina as ‘Madam’. Sheikh Hasina asked him to call her ‘Apa’.

Abdullah Al Imran further said that Sheikh Hasina wanted to know where he studied, whether he lived in the hall or not, and why he did not live there. He said, ‘At one point, Sheikh Hasina understood that I was a protester. She asked me, did the police shoot you? I said, the police shot me directly. I don’t know who was in police uniform. After me, she spoke to four to five more people. Later, when Sheikh Hasina was leaving, she went to the help desk and gave the order “No Treatment No Release”, which I heard.

However, Abdullah Al Imran also mentioned in his statement that he did not understand what “No Treatment No Release” meant at that time. He said that at one stage, he saw that his surgery was not being done on time. He could not buy medicine from outside. His father wanted to take him from the hospital, but he could not. Then he understood what “No Treatment No Release” meant. They wanted to amputate his leg and take him to prison.

Abdullah Al Imran blamed Sheikh Hasina, former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal and former Inspector General of Police Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun for this incident.

Microbus driver Khokon Chandra Barman testified as the first witness in the case on Sunday.

The formal trial of ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina began yesterday in a case of crimes against humanity committed during the July uprising. The trial began with the presentation of opening statements and taking testimony at the International Crimes Tribunal-1.

The formal trial of the crime against humanity that was committed during the student-public movement in July and August last year, has begun through this case, a year after the case. Accused Sheikh Hasina and Asaduzzaman Khan are absconding. The formal trial against these three accused began after following all legal procedures, including publishing a notice in the newspaper to surrender them, appointing state-appointed lawyers for the absconding accused, holding a hearing on the framing of charges, and formalizing the charges.

The only accused arrested in this case is Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun. He has already admitted responsibility for the crimes against humanity. In addition, he has become an ‘approver’ in this case (the accused admits guilt and reveals the true account of the incident; he is generally known as a royal witness). He was produced before the tribunal yesterday. Parts of the case proceedings were broadcast live on BTV.
