The injured Jawaharlal Basak is a retired professor and department head of the Physics Department of Pabna Government Edward College. Teachers and students of Pabna Government Edward College formed a human chain on Monday afternoon in protest of the attack. Various student organizations including the college branch Chhatra Dal and Chhatra Shibir participated in the human chain held in front of the main gate of the college. In addition, human chains were formed separately in the city under the banner of the district Hindu community. These programs strongly condemned and protested the incident and demanded the arrest of the miscreants.

Talking to Jawaharlal Basak and his neighbors, it was learned that Jawaharlal Basak lives alone at home. Most of his relatives live outside the country. He returned home from the market at around 2 pm yesterday. Two miscreants were already at his house. As soon as Jawaharlal Basak entered the house, the miscreants grabbed his face, stabbed him with a sharp weapon, and fled. The miscreants vandalized and destroyed the cupboards and furniture in his house. Later, hearing his screams, the neighbors came and rescued him, treated him at Pabna General Hospital, and brought him back home. Jawaharlal Basak said, “When I entered the house, two people grabbed me by the face and stabbed me. They destroyed everything in the house. The cupboards were broken, they didn’t get anything, that’s all.”

In protest of this incident, teachers and students of Edward College, ignoring the rain, formed a human chain at around 12:30 pm today, Monday. Leaders and activists of various student organizations including Chhatra Dal and Islami Chhatra Shibir participated in the hour-long human chain. College Vice-Principal Md. Abdul Khalek, General Secretary of the Teachers’ Council Lutfar Rahman, and Head of the Chemistry Department Pradeep Kumar among others spoke. The student wing formed another human chain separately.

In addition, the district Hindu community formed a human chain in front of the Joykalibari temple on Hospital Road in the district town. Sadar Upazila Puja Udjapan Parishad President Prabash Bhadra, Joykalibari Temple Committee Convener Gaurang Majumdar and District Puja Udjapan Parishad Joint Secretary Achinta Kumar Ghosh spoke at the event. The speakers said that Jawaharlal Basak Tulshi is a senior teacher. He has been teaching with a good reputation for a long time. He lives a quiet life. Many of his students are in various big institutions of the country. An attack on a talented teacher like him is unacceptable under any circumstances. The attackers must be identified quickly and brought to justice.

When asked, Pabna Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Abdus Salam said, “Initially, it is believed that two robbers went to the teacher’s house with the intention of robbing him. Sir, the attack took place after he saw the matter. A case has been registered in the incident. We have received some CCTV footage. “The matter is being taken seriously. Hopefully, it will be possible to arrest the accused very soon and bring them to justice.”
