Retailers said that the price of mini-ket rice has increased by six to eight taka per kilogram in the past week. And coarse and medium rice has increased by two to three taka per kilogram.

The city’s middle-class consumers usually eat more miniket rice. A visit to the market showed that miniket rice of brands like Diamond, Manjur, Sagar, Rashid etc. was sold at 80 to 82 taka per kg in retail shops in Dhaka yesterday. A week ago, these rice were also sold at 75-76 taka per kg. In addition, the price of Mozammel miniket rice has increased by about six to eight taka per kg. As a result, Mozammel rice was sold at 88-90 taka per kg yesterday. Many vendors said that due to the high price, Mozammel rice is no longer available in their shops.
People with low and lower middle incomes usually eat more coarse and medium rice. A kg of these rice usually costs around 50-55 taka. The prices of these rice have also increased recently. The price of Swarna rice, known as coarse rice, increased by 2 to 3 taka per kg to 57-58 taka yesterday. And the price of medium rice of the Bri-28 and Bri-29 varieties has also increased by 2 taka per kg to 60-62 taka.
Traders say that the new season of Boro rice has been in the market for a month and a half. Rice made from this rice came to the market at the beginning of last month. As a result, the price of miniket rice fell by 10 to 12 taka per kg in the first week of May. This rice was being sold at that price. But as the price of Boro rice suddenly increased again, rice mill owners also increased the price of miniket rice from last week.
Naogaon district is one of the leading rice and paddy producing areas in the country. Farhad Hossain Chakdar, general secretary of the rice mill owners group in this district, told Prothom Alo that the prices of jeerashail and kataribhog paddy have increased abnormally. In the span of a week, the price of jeerashail paddy has increased by 125-150 taka per maund and the price of kataribhog paddy by 150 to 200 taka. As a result, the price of wholesale rice in Naogaon has increased by 1 to 3 taka per kg.
