The incident occurred on Thursday. Such disruptions are not uncommon in Starlink’s powerful satellite internet system. Downdetector, a company that monitors internet service disruptions, said that users in the United States and Europe experienced problems using Starlink’s internet at around 3 pm local time. About 61,000 users reported internet connection disruptions to the company.

Starlink provides internet services in 140 countries and territories around the world. There are more than 6 million users.

Later, Starlink officially announced the internet service disruption through a post on the social media X. Starlink said it was actively working to resolve the issue. Michael Nichols, vice president of Starlink Engineering, wrote in a post that internet service was back up and running after about two and a half hours of the outage. He apologized to users and said the outage was caused by a critical internal software service failure in the network. He also promised to find the root cause.

Elon Musk himself also expressed his regret. SpaceX CEO Elon Musk wrote in a post that he was sorry for the outage. SpaceX will find the root cause and resolve it so that it doesn’t happen again in the future.
