A powerful 8.8-magnitude earthquake has struck off the eastern coast of Russia. The quake struck at 8:25 a.m. local time on Wednesday, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) said.

The Japan Meteorological Agency issued a tsunami warning after the powerful quake off the Russian coast. The warning said a tsunami of up to one meter, or 3.3 feet, could hit Japan’s eastern coast.

The updated warning said a tsunami of more than three meters could hit northern Hokkaido, Japan, from 10 a.m. local time today. It is expected to gradually spread south.

Meanwhile, the US Pacific Tsunami Warning Center immediately declared a ‘tsunami watch’ for the state of Hawaii. A similar warning has been issued in Taiwan.
