Among the dead was Didarul Islam, a Bangladeshi-origin officer with the New York City Police Department (NYPD). He is 36 years old.
A 27-year-old man named Shane Tamura carried out the attack at 6:30 pm on Monday, US local time. NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch told the media that Shane Tamura arrived in New York from Las Vegas an hour before the incident. Tamura entered the multi-story corporate building and opened fire indiscriminately before shooting himself. Initial investigations have found evidence that he was mentally ill. Didarul Islam fought bravely and died.
NYPD Inspector Khandaker Abdullah told Prothom Alo that Didarul Islam had been working faithfully for about four years. His family includes his parents, wife and two children. His wife is now pregnant. He lived in the Perchester area of the Bronx borough. And his workplace was the 47th Precinct of the Bronx. They brought the body from the hospital at midnight on Monday. His funeral may be held on Thursday.
Didarul’s home is in Kulaura Upazila of Moulvibazar, Bangladesh, he said.
Khandaker Abdullah also said that his father suffered a heart attack after hearing the news that Didarul Islam was killed in the attack. He has been taken to the hospital.
