Obstacles are being created to organize elections in a smooth manner
BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman has said that those who want to gain their own benefits by putting a gun to the neck of the interim government are creating obstacles to the holding of the national elections. He said, “We see people from different classes and professions saying that they want to maintain their control by putting a gun to the neck of the interim government or want to gain benefits in various ways or organize their own affairs by exerting influence, they are the ones who are creating obstacles to the holding of the national elections in a clever way.”
Obstacles are being created to organize elections in a smooth manner
Tarique Rahman was the chief guest at a discussion meeting organized by the Bangladesh Sammilit Peshajibi Parishad at the Engineers Institution premises in the capital on Monday afternoon. He joined the meeting virtually from London. The discussion meeting was organized on the contribution of professionals in the anti-fascist movement and the mass uprising of 24. The families of martyrs and professionals who were victims of torture were honored at the event. The event saw the unveiling of a souvenir titled “Professionals in Restoring Democracy” and a documentary on the role of professionals in the anti-fascist movement in the last 16 years.
At the beginning of his speech at the meeting, Tarique Rahman expressed his condolences over the casualties in the plane crash in the capital’s Uttara. At the same time, he instructed the leaders of BNP and its affiliates and associate organizations to provide assistance to the families of the deceased and the injured in the treatment of the injured.
Tarique Rahman said at the meeting that some political parties have suddenly become vocal in demanding PR (proportional representation) elections. Introducing a proportional representation election system in Bangladesh will mean paving the way for separatism, fascism and extremism in the state and politics. As a result, in addition to creating confusion in the society, the government may become unstable. The country’s independence and sovereignty may be threatened.
The acting chairman of BNP said that if the people of the country want unity, the proportional representation election system should not be introduced in any way. BNP believes that elections under the PR system are not suitable for Bangladesh in the interests of the country and the people.
Noting that many people are very active in various ways to take credit for the mass uprising, Tarique Rahman said, if there was this activity in preparing the list of martyrs, a final list could have been prepared by now. He mentioned that it is regrettable that the complete list of martyrs has not been prepared even though it has been going on for almost a year. The acting chairman of the party said that if BNP gets the opportunity to run the state, it is thinking of naming various state institutions after martyrs.
The meeting was presided over by AZM Zahid Hossain, president of the Bangladesh Sammilit Peshajibi Parishad. The moderators were Quader Gani Chowdhury, member secretary of the council, and Professor Morshed Hasan Khan, member secretary of the committee formed by BNP to celebrate the anniversary of the July-August mass uprising, mourning and victory. Kamruzzaman, Abrar Rahim, son of former NSI DG Abdur Rahim, Mahir Sarwar Megh, son of martyred journalists Sagar-Runi, Shahina Begum, mother of martyred Sajjad Hossain in the mass uprising, and many others.
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir was scheduled to deliver a speech at the event. He was also present at the event. Organizers said that Mirza Fakhrul went to the National Burn and Plastic Surgery Institute in the middle of the event on the advice of Tarique Rahman to see the injured in the plane crash in Uttara.
