Netanyahu has been saying the same thing about Iran’s nuclear program for 30 years
Netanyahu sometimes said that Iran would acquire the capability to build a nuclear bomb in a few years, sometimes in a few months. But his words have never been proven true.
As a member of the Israeli parliament, the Knesset, Netanyahu spoke at a session in 1992. Since that session, he has been claiming that Tehran will be able to build a nuclear bomb in just a few years.
In the Knesset session that year, Netanyahu said that Iran will be able to build a nuclear bomb on its own within the next three to five years.
Netanyahu also mentioned this in his book ‘Fighting Terrorism’, written in 1995.
Netanyahu’s ‘sense of imminent threat’ has had a significant impact on his relationship with US officials. In 2002, he spoke before a US Congressional committee. He still claimed that Iraq and Iran were competing to develop nuclear weapons. He also advised the United States to attack Iraq.
Shortly after, the United States attacked Iraq, alleging that it had a stockpile of weapons of mass destruction. But no weapons of mass destruction were later found there.
In a secret US State Department cable leaked by WikiLeaks in 2009, Netanyahu told members of Congress that Iran would acquire nuclear power within a year or two.
Three years later, in 2012, at the United Nations General Assembly, Netanyahu showed a cartoon bomb and said that Iran would complete medium-level uranium enrichment next spring, or next summer at the latest, and move to the final stage of developing a nuclear bomb.
More than 30 years have passed since the radical Israeli prime minister first warned about Iran’s nuclear program. But Iran has not developed a nuclear bomb.
