NCP not getting ‘Shapla’ symbol

The National Citizen Party (NCP), a political party formed by the youth who led the mass uprising, recently applied to the EC for registration as a party. They have asked for ‘shapla’ as their symbol. In addition to the shapla, the NCP’s application has listed ‘pen’ and ‘mobile phone’ as its preferred symbols.

On the other hand, Nagorik Oikya also asked for the party symbol ‘shapla’. However, they got ‘kettle’. Now Nagorik Oikya has also demanded the ‘shapla’ symbol instead of the kettle. After meeting the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) on July 2, Shakib Anwar, the organizing secretary of Nagorik Oikya, told reporters, ‘When we got the registration, we did not get the symbol of our choice.’ Considering this, we applied for a change of symbol on June 17 and want “Shapla” and “Doel” in order of preference.’ Election Commissioner Abdur Rahmanel Machud told Prothom Alo on Wednesday that a policy decision has been made not to list Shapla as an election symbol. He said that in the past, some parties had also asked for the Shapla symbol, but it was not given. There is a law to protect the honor of the national symbol and the national flag. However, no law has been made regarding national flowers or fruits. Taking these issues into consideration, a policy decision has been taken not to list Shapla as an election symbol.
