NCP announces political fight if it does not get ‘Shapla’ symbol

NCP Chief Coordinator Nasiruddin Patwari made this announcement at a press briefing after meeting Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin at the Election Building in Agargaon in the capital on Sunday.

Nasiruddin Patwari said, ‘We have no alternative option other than the shapla as our election symbol. We have seen in the legal way that there is no obstacle for us to get the shapla legally. If there is any obstacle, we will fight it politically.’

Nasiruddin Patwari questioned the impartiality of the members of the Election Mission (EC). He said, ‘The EC must be reconstituted before the elections. Straight forward. The law by which the EC was reconstituted must also be changed.’

Nasiruddin Patwari alleged that many in the EC are working as party spokespersons. However, he said, those who have shown good work in this EC can be kept.

A five-member NCP delegation participated in the meeting with the CEC. Apart from Nasiruddin Patwari, the others were NCP Chief Organizer (South) Hasnat Abdullah, Chief Organizer (North) Sarjis Alam, Joint Member Secretary Zahirul Islam and Joint Convener Khalid Saifullah.

NCP Joint Member Secretary Zahirul Islam summarized the meeting with the CEC. He said that in the meeting, they submitted a new application to the Election Commission for the allocation of Shapla as a symbol.

In addition, in the discussion, the NCP delegation demanded that the Awami League boat symbol be removed from the Election Commission’s list. Zahirul Islam said that since the registration of the Awami League is suspended, the boat symbol should be removed from the Commission’s list accordingly. They have brought it to the attention of the EC. The Commission has said that it will give special consideration to the matter.
