Most parties agree on bicameral parliament and no more than two terms as prime minister: Ali Riaz

Professor Ali Riaz, Vice-Chairman of the National Consensus Commission, said that most political parties have agreed on the formation of the upper and lower houses of the National Parliament. In addition, most political parties have also agreed that no person should be the prime minister more than twice.

Professor Ali Riaz said this at the end of the second phase of today’s discussion of the National Consensus Commission with political parties at the Doel Hall of the Foreign Service Academy in the capital on Thursday.

The vice-chairman of the Consensus Commission said that although the constitution and the basic principles of the state, the term of the prime minister and the determination of constituencies were supposed to be discussed on Thursday, the discussion on the presidential election was again held yesterday as the discussion on this issue was unfinished.

Professor Ali Riaz, vice-chairman of the National Consensus Commission, said that most political parties have agreed on the formation of the upper and lower houses of the National Parliament. In addition, most political parties have also agreed that no person should be the prime minister more than two terms.

Professor Ali Riaz said this after today’s second phase of the National Consensus Commission’s discussion with political parties at the Doel Hall of the Foreign Service Academy in the capital on Thursday.

The Vice-Chairman of the Consensus Commission said that although the discussion on the constitution and the basic principles of the state, the term of the Prime Minister and the determination of constituencies were scheduled for Thursday, the discussion on this issue was resumed as the discussion on the presidential election was unfinished yesterday.

This issue also came up for discussion today as there is a question about the type of the National Parliament to determine the voters in the presidential election. Professor Ali Riaz said, “The political parties have drawn our attention, since it is important to determine the type of parliament for the presidential election, so this issue must be decided first. In this regard, most political parties agree that the parliament can be bicameral.”

Noting that a consensus could not be reached on any issue on Thursday despite the discussion, Professor Ali Riaz said, “We want to clarify that most political parties have voted in favor of a bicameral parliament. But there was no consensus on the issue. Most political parties have said that a person cannot be the Prime Minister more than twice. However, more discussions are needed to reach a consensus. The unfinished issues will be discussed again next week.
