However, Sufiur Rahman’s name was still on the list of special assistants to Professor Yunus with the rank of State Minister on the website of the chief advisor’s office last Wednesday.
Several officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs told Prothom Alo on condition of anonymity that Sufiur Rahman wanted to meet the chief advisor Professor Muhammad Yunus after his appointment. He wanted to meet Professor Yunus and join the work with his instructions. But he could not meet him at that time because the chief advisor went on a trip to Qatar immediately after the appointment. Although the chief advisor returned home after his visits to Qatar and Vatican City, Sufiur Rahman did not get the opportunity to meet him in the end.

Former diplomat Mohammad Sufiur Rahman was appointed as the Special Assistant to the Principal Advisor about two months ago. He has not joined work even after 66 days of his appointment to perform his duties in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs with the status of Minister of State. As a result, it is not yet clear whether the appointment given to him on April 20 is still valid or has been canceled.
Of course, Sufiur Rahman’s name was also on the list of special assistants to Professor Yunus with the rank of state minister on the website of the Chief Advisor’s office last Wednesday.
Several officials of the Foreign Ministry, on condition of anonymity, told Prothom Alo that after his appointment, Sufiur Rahman wanted to meet with Chief Advisor Professor Muhammad Yunus. He wanted to meet Professor Yunus and join the work with his instructions. But he could not meet him at that time as the Chief Advisor went on a tour of Qatar immediately after his appointment. Although the Chief Advisor returned home after his tour of Qatar and Vatican City, Sufiur Rahman did not get the opportunity to meet him in the end.
The officials said that they had learned informally that Sufiur Rahman was no longer joining the Foreign Ministry as a special assistant to the Chief Advisor.
Sufiur Rahman was appointed to the Foreign Ministry with the rank of state minister. His name is still on the government website. When asked about his current status, Foreign Affairs Advisor Md. Touhid Hossain told reporters on Thursday, “He did not join this position here. That much I can say.”
The government had planned to appoint Sufiur Rahman as the special assistant to the chief advisor on Rohingya affairs in October last year. On the advice of Foreign Affairs Advisor Md. Touhid Hossain, the appointment was under consideration with the rank of senior secretary. He even met Professor Yunus in early October. But immediately after the meeting with the chief advisor, various campaigns were launched against Sufiur Rahman on social media. It is said that Sufiur Rahman was an ally of the Awami League government that was ousted in the July mass uprising. At that time, it is alleged that a section of officials in the Foreign Ministry also circulated e-mails taking a stand against Sufiur Rahman. In such a situation, his plan for that appointment was not implemented in the end.
