BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia was accused in three cases related to the sabotage incident in Chauddagram, Comilla in January and February 2015. After more than a decade, she has been acquitted of all the cases. The cases have been withdrawn due to political considerations. The accused in these cases were leaders and activists of BNP and Jamaat.
On Monday afternoon, Comilla Court Public Prosecutor (PP) Kaimul Haque alias Rinku confirmed the withdrawal of the cases to Prothom Alo. He said that BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia has been acquitted due to the withdrawal of these cases last week and her lack of involvement.
Kaimul Haque said that the cases filed by the then government in Chauddagram, Comilla in January and February 2015 were withdrawn in consideration of political cases, and the case against the other accused has been withdrawn. And since it was proven that she was not involved in the incident, the court has acquitted BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia from three cases.
The court’s public prosecutor said that on February 3, 2015, eight passengers were killed in a petrol bomb attack on a bus in Jagmohanpur, Chauddagram upazila. In that incident, the police filed two separate cases under the Murder and Explosives Acts. BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia and 78 others were included in the charge sheet in the case. The plaintiff in this case was the then police officer of Chauddagram Police Station, Nuruzzaman Howlader. After the fall of the Awami League government on August 5 last year, the judge of Additional District and Sessions Judge Court-2, Shafiqul Islam, discharged Begum Khaleda Zia from the case as her involvement was not proven in the hearing of the two cases. This is because Begum Khaleda Zia was blocked by a sand truck at her Gulshan residence at the time of the incident.
