July martyrs’ family members seek representation in parliament
They expressed this expectation at a discussion meeting titled ‘Mass Uprising 2024, National Unity and Democratic Movement’ organized by BNP on Tuesday to mark the anniversary of the July Uprising. BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia was the chief guest at the meeting organized at the Bangladesh-China Friendship International Conference Center. She joined online and delivered her speech. In addition, the meeting was inaugurated by the party’s acting chairman Tarique Rahman via virtual connection. The party’s Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir was the special guest.
At the beginning of the discussion meeting, family members of those martyred and injured in the July Uprising and victims of disappearances, murders and torture during the previous government’s tenure spoke. Yameen’s father, Mohiuddin, who was martyred in Savar during the July Uprising, said that for the sake of peace, only the election of the upper house of parliament should be held through the proportional representation (PR) system. At the same time, he said that he hopes to nominate 10 representatives from the martyr family (July Uprising) to the upper and lower houses of parliament in the next election. Mir Mahfuzur Rahman Mugda’s father, Mir Mostafizur Rahman, said that the martyr family should have a share. Ramzan Ali, brother of martyr Abu Sayeed in Rangpur, said, “If Abu Sayeed had not stood up for himself, the situation (change) in the country would not have been so easy. Abu Sayeed, by standing up for himself in front of bullets, gave courage to all professionals, regardless of party affiliation.”
