‘Joy Bangla’ song confusion, attack on student and public event, thinking it is Awami League
A ‘music party’ was organized at the abandoned office of the district Awami League in Chandpur on August 15. At the event, organized by some students and the public who participated in the July movement, the song ‘Joy Bangla, Jitbe Abar Nouka’ was played ‘in a satire’. Hearing the song, another group of people attacked them thinking that ‘Awami League is back’. At that time, the equipment brought for the music party was vandalized.

A student involved in the anti-discrimination movement named Aryan Ahmed was injured in the attack. On receiving information, the police and district BNP general secretary Salimullah Selim and other leaders went to the scene and calmed the situation. The attack took place at around 10:30 pm on Friday. Some eyewitnesses said that some students and the public who participated in the July movement organized a music party on the ground floor of the abandoned office of the district Awami League last night, focusing on the one-year anniversary of Sheikh Hasina’s escape in the mass uprising and August 15. Various songs including ‘Joy Bangla, Jitbe Ebar Nouka’ and ‘Paliyech, Sheikh Hasina Palyeche’ were played. But after hearing the song ‘Joy Bangla, Jitbe Ebar Nouka’, a group of people suddenly attacked the district Awami League office, thinking that ‘Awami League and Chhatra League have taken a stand’.
On receiving the news, the officer-in-charge (OC) of Chandpur Sadar Model Police Station Md. Bahar Mia came to the spot. At the same time, the general secretary of the district BNP, Salimullah Selim, came and calmed everyone down with a police microphone. Amidst the vandalism and tension, a student was injured in the incident. He has been admitted to the hospital.
An eyewitness, a leader of the anti-discrimination student movement, said on condition of anonymity that a few students organized a music party on the ground floor of the district Awami League on August 15. People from different parties were present. After 9:30 pm, the police came and tried to stop them after hearing the songs being played there. But realizing that the event was against the Awami League, they left. But after hearing the song ‘Joy Bangla, this boat will win’, a BNP leader from Faridganj came and stopped him. A group of people came with him and started vandalism by saying ‘Resist fascism’. Later, the district BNP general secretary came and calmed everyone down. The incident basically happened due to a misunderstanding.
Asked about it, BNP leader Salimullah Selim said, ‘I was at the nearby Chandpur Club at the time of the incident. At that time, I was called by the anti-discrimination and BNP. Then I ran and saw that the incident was extremely tense and vandalized. Later, everyone was ordered to leave the Awami League office and everyone left. If I had not gone there on time, a terrible situation would have been created.’
Chandpur Model Police Station OC Md. Bahar Mia said that so far no complaint or case has been filed with the police station in this incident.
