‘Inclusive’ university wants VP, GS to work together

The newly elected Vice President (VP) of Jahangirnagar University Central Students’ Union (JACSU) Abdur Rashid Jitu wants to build an ‘inclusive’ university by including all parties and views. On the other hand, even though the VP was elected from outside his own panel, the newly elected General Secretary (GS) from the Chhatra Shibir-supported panel, Mazharul Islam, wants to work together in unity.

The newly elected VP and GS made these comments to Prothom Alo in their initial reaction after the announcement of the JACSU election results on Saturday. Stating that the students of Jahangirnagar University were deprived of their legitimate rights for 33 years, VP Abdur Rashid said, ‘We got those rights back through the JACSU election after the mass uprising and the movement. We never wanted to be the leader or VP of JACSU. Our desire was to bring back the rights that students were deprived of for 33 years.’

Noting that more candidates from the Chhatra Shibir panel won in the election, the newly elected VP said, ‘But our first task will be to build an inclusive Jahangirnagar by taking all parties and views together. The manifesto we gave is not a miraculous manifesto that we cannot implement. The demands of the students are our manifesto. The rights that university students were deprived of for a long time will be realized.’

Meaning that he wants to stop the practice of partisan politics, Abdur Rashid Jitu said, ‘We will stop all kinds of partisan politics from the university, God willing. Because, we have seen how partisan politics destroys the academic life of students. We will continue to work as needed to achieve the rights of students.’

Meanwhile, the newly elected GS of Jaksur, Mazharul Islam, said, ‘Even if the newly elected VP is elected from outside our panel, we will all work together in unity. Our first task will be to bring the teachers involved in the attack carried out by the Chhatra League on the university during the July movement to justice and to resolve the transportation problem in the university.’ Stating that he wants to build a beautiful, safe campus with the students, Mazharul Islam, the office and publication secretary of the university branch Chhatra Shibir, said, ‘We will try to implement everything that is necessary to develop students into research-oriented.’

The newly elected GS said, ‘70 percent of the students voted in the election. All the candidates and students have accepted this election and the vote counting has been completed fairly. The pledge that the Unified Student Alliance has made to the students and the trust with which the students elected us, we are committed to fulfilling that pledge to the letter.’

The leader of the camp said, stating that they will work tirelessly for the welfare of the students and the university, ‘Ensuring women’s freedom and safety will be our first priority.’
