Husband sentenced to death for beating wife to death over dowry
A court has sentenced Mirza Sakhawat Hossain (51) to death for killing his wife for dowry two years ago in the capital’s Mohammadpur. Judge of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-6 in Dhaka, Mochha. Kamrunnahar, gave the verdict on Monday. Mirza Sakhawat has been sent to jail after the verdict was announced. According to the case documents, Fatema Begum (45) was beaten to death in a rented house in Mohammadpur on January 10, 2023, for dowry of Tk 1 crore. In this incident, Fatema’s elder sister Arzina Begum filed a case against Mirza Sakhawat Hossain at Mohammadpur Police Station under Section 11-A of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act. Sakhawat was arrested immediately. He has been in jail since then.

The case was investigated and a charge sheet was submitted against Sakhawat in a Dhaka court on August 24, 2023. Saiful Islam, a bench assistant of the court, told Prothom Alo that 17 witnesses were presented in court against Saiful by the state.
The plaintiff in the case alleged that since their marriage, her husband Sakhawat had been torturing Fatima Begum for various reasons. At one stage, he repeatedly pressured Fatima to sell land from her father’s house and bring back one crore taka. Fatima did not agree to this. Because of this, there was a family dispute between them for several years. On the day of the incident, her husband Sakhawat hit his wife on the head with a stone at their house in Mohammadpur.
