The court has sentenced Md. Titu to death for burning Dalia Begum to death for dowry nearly 23 years ago in Kamrangirchar, the capital Dhaka. The other four accused have been acquitted.

Judge Munshi Md. Moshiar Rahman of Dhaka’s Women and Child Repression Prevention Tribunal-4 gave the order on Sunday.

Titu poured kerosene on Dalia’s body at her home on September 7, 2002 and set her on fire. Dalia died six days later while undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital. She gave a statement before her death. The other four accused who were acquitted are Amena Begum, Shah Alam, Jeboni and Mustafa. Among them, Amena Begum Md. Titu’s mother. The remaining three are Titu’s relatives. Titu, who was sentenced to death, was sent to prison after the verdict was announced.

According to the case documents, Dalia Begum married Titu, a resident of Munshiganj, about 28 years ago. After the marriage, Dalia’s husband demanded 50,000 taka as dowry. Dalia was often beaten up for not paying the dowry.

In this incident, Dalia’s father, Rawshan Ali, was filing a case under the Prevention of Violence against Women and Children Act at Kamrangirchar Police Station. After the investigation, the police submitted a chargesheet to the court on January 6, 2003 against five people, including Titu.
