The country’s only crocodile breeding farm has been established on the Tumbru hills in Naiksyangchhari, Bandarban. There are about 3,000 crocodiles in this farm, of which more than 1,000 are exportable, but it has been stuck in legal complications for a decade. Even though visitors come to see the crocodiles, the economic future of the farm is uncertain. ‘Crocodiles in the water, tigers on land’ – this very old saying says that crocodiles have existed in this country since time immemorial. But the news of water crocodiles living on the mountaintops can surprise anyone. Crocodiles can really be seen on the mountaintops of the Tumbru area of Ghumdhum union in Naiksyangchhari, Bandarban. And that too, not one or two, but several thousand.

The country’s only commercial crocodile farm is located on the Tumbru hills. There are 3,000 crocodiles, both small and large, in that 25-acre farm. Baby crocodiles can be seen jumping in multiple enclosures along the road. A group of crocodiles are lying motionless like tree trunks in some enclosures. Some crocodiles are busy eating chickens. There are also crocodiles in several reservoirs under the mountain. Visitors regularly flock to the farm. They go around and see crocodiles. They try to learn about the life cycle of crocodiles. Some collect information about the history of building farms on the mountaintop and crocodiles.
Such a scene was seen recently while visiting the farm in Naikshongchhari. The workers here said that the farm was built with the aim of exporting crocodiles abroad. However, the export permit has not been obtained yet. Therefore, the farm has not yet been able to make a profit.
The farm authorities said that the breeding season of crocodiles starts from April. The season is still going on. Several chicks have also been born from the eggs. About 200 chicks have been born this season. There will be 150 more chicks by next August. In total, the number of crocodiles in the farm will be close to three thousand.
