UNO Md. Rabiul Islam posted a picture of the hilsa being caught on his Facebook ID. He wrote there, ‘A live hilsa in the pond of the UNO bungalow in Kalapara! I had left a connection with the pond to the neighboring canal. Maybe the hilsa could enter from there.’ He further commented, ‘If we can keep our canals clean, the fish population will increase.’ UNO Rabiul Islam told Prothom Alo, ‘Hilsa in the pond, this is really surprising news. After hearing the news of the hilsa being caught, many people from the area gathered to take a look. However, the hilsa was dead after being lifted from the pond to the shore.’ He said that the length of the caught hilsa was about 9 inches and the width was 3.5 inches. Apart from this, the same net also catches laksa, coral, tilapia, rui, catal, perse, minar cup and shrimp.

Fisherman Md. Abul Hossain, who is engaged in fishing, said, ‘I was brought a dyke to catch fish in the pond. When I took a few more jaylas and pulled them from one side of the pond to the other, I caught hilsa fish along with other fish. I was surprised to see hilsa fish in the pond.’

Hilsa researcher and Patuakhali District Fisheries Officer (DFO) Md. Kamrul Islam said, ‘In February 2017, 2,200 hilsa fry were released in the pond of Kalapara Upazila Parishad. I took the initiative to release these hilsa. The hilsa released at that time are the hilsa caught today, it is clear. I understood that hilsa lives for 7-8 years.’
