The embankment of the Kapotax River in Koira, Khulna has collapsed. Early this Friday, 300 meters of the 13-14/2 Polder of the Water Development Board (Pawbo) dam collapsed into the river at five places in Harinkhola village of Koyra upazila.
This erosion has threatened the lives of about 15,000 people in Harinkhola, Koyra No. 2, Gobra, Ghatakhali, Madinabad villages adjacent to the dam, as well as the Koyra upazila headquarters.
It was learned from talking to the people of Harinkhola village that the tide in the river was at least 4 feet higher than the normal tide on Thursday night due to the low pressure created in the Bay of Bengal. When the water started to recede this morning due to the low tide, a sudden crack and collapse occurred in the embankment along the banks of the Kapotaksha river. Before the eyes of the local people, a 300-meter section of the embankment, along with geo bags and large pieces of soil laid to prevent erosion, instantly disappeared into the river. Locals fear that if the Paubo does not take immediate action to prevent erosion, cropland and numerous fish enclosures will be submerged in the river.
This morning, when we went to the embankment area of the Kapotaksha River, we saw that the soil had shifted in all the places where the embankment had collapsed, and the sand in the middle had come out. The water waves are washing away that sand. The course of the river water has changed and is crashing against the embankment. Local residents are trying to repair the collapsed areas. Some are cutting soil from the side and dumping it in the collapsed areas, while others are lifting geo bags from the embankment slope and placing them in the collapsed embankment area.

The embankment of the Kapotax River in Koira, Khulna has collapsed. This Friday morning, 300 meters of the polder number 13-14/2 of the Water Development Board (PAUBO) dam collapsed into the river.
About 15,000 people in Harinkhola, Koyra No. 2, Gobra, Ghatakhali, Madinabad villages, and Koyra Upazila Sadar, which are adjacent to the dam, are at risk of erosion.
It was learned from the people of Harinkhola village that the low pressure created in the Bay of Bengal caused the river to rise at least 4 feet higher than normal at night on Thursday. When the water started to recede this morning due to the pull of the low tide, a sudden crack and collapse occurred in the embankment along the banks of the Kapotaksha River. In front of the eyes of the local people, a 300-meter section of the embankment, filled with geo-bags and large pieces of soil, disappeared into the river in an instant. If the PAUBO does not take immediate action to prevent erosion, the local people fear that cropland and numerous fish pens will be submerged in the river.
This morning, when I went to the embankment area of the Kapotaksha River, I saw that the soil had shifted in all the places where the embankment had collapsed and the sand inside had come out. The water waves were washing away the sand. The course of the river water changed and was crashing against the embankment. Local residents are trying to repair the collapsed areas. Some are cutting soil from the side and dumping it in the collapsed areas, while others are lifting geo bags from the embankment slope and placing them in the collapsed embankment area.
Local resident Mostafiz Sheikh said while cutting soil and placing it in the collapsed area of the embankment, “If the residents do not come forward to protect the embankment, it will be too late. Then there will be no living conditions in the area. Those who are responsible for repairing the embankment do not have time to move forward. All the deaths are of people who are eating like a pig.”
Hafizul Molla, a resident of Harinkhola village, expressed his anger and said that this embankment was built only three and a half years ago. However, the dam has already started to break. During construction, soil was placed on the top and both sides of the dam, but sand was placed inside. Due to this, the dam has become weak and is now collapsing even with a slight increase in tidal water. To prevent the dam from breaking, it is necessary to provide paved blocks on the river banks.
