He threw away the bag containing 4 lakh taka and 11 bhoris of gold to escape kidnapping.

Some people dressed in RAB uniforms tried to forcefully take Ranjan Chandra Singha into a microbus near the capital’s Secretariat Metro Station. To escape from their hands, he threw the bag filled with Tk 4 lakh and 11 bhari gold ornaments onto the road.

Masud Alam, Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Ramna Division of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), said this while describing a robbery incident. He highlighted the incident last Monday at a press conference at the DMP’s Media and Public Relations Department office on Saturday afternoon.

Shahbagh Police Station arrested eight people in the incident last Thursday. The arrested people are Mintu Halder (42), Nazmul Hasan (40), Nirmal Halder (37), Salauddin (35), Delwar Hossain Sikder (55), Syed Shamim Hossain (45), Pavitra Pal (38) and Balaram Chandra Pal (37).

DC Masud Alam said at a press conference that on Monday, at around 2:55 pm, a person named Ranjan Chandra Singh was walking towards the Bangladesh Secretariat Metro Station. Suddenly, three or four people dressed in RAB uniforms tried to forcefully pick him up in a white microbus. At that time, Ranjan threw a bag full of cash and gold ornaments on the road to escape from their hands. Then the people dressed in RAB uniforms pushed Ranjan, picked up his bag from the road and quickly fled the scene. The bag contained 4 lakh taka in cash and about 11 bhari worth of gold ornaments. Later, a case was registered in the incident.

Stating that eight people have been arrested in the incident, DC Masud Alam said that a team from Shahbagh Police Station conducted a drive with the help of information technology. The eight people were arrested after conducting a drive in the Shahbagh Police Station area around 8 am on Thursday. At that time, RAB uniforms, badges, caps, 11 mobile phones, 2 toy pistols, and 2 handcuffs used in the robbery were recovered from their custody.

Ramna Zone DC said that those who committed the robbery under the RAB identity were members of an organized gang of robbers. They used to follow gold traders in the Tanti Bazar Swarnapatti area of the capital, block their way at convenient places, and commit robberies under the identity of RAB and DB.
