Government will try to deliver the best election: Press Secretary
Shafiqul Alam held a press conference today, Thursday, after the meeting of the Advisory Council at the Secretariat. A journalist there asked how the preparations for the next national elections are going on. The Press Secretary said this when asked about the statement of the political parties regarding the election deadline, Shafiqul Alam said that the political parties have welcomed the government’s decision. The government will try to present the best election possible. In the meantime, the Election Commission has started its work. The administration has started preparing.
When asked about the trial of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the Press Secretary said that the aim of the interim government is to bring the former Prime Minister back to the country. It will be ensured that she (Hasina) gets justice. The investigative reports of Al-Jazeera and BBC have shown what she has done. He ordered the use of lethal weapons. The world knows that now. The government hopes that Sheikh Hasina will return to the country and face justice.
During the question and answer session, a journalist asked, “Tomorrow (August 8) will be the first anniversary of the interim government. At this time, the law and order situation has deteriorated, the administration has collapsed. What is the government’s statement on this matter?”
In response, Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam said, “If you compare it with the past, you will see that crime and murder are decreasing. If there are one or two murders, it is said that the law and order situation has collapsed. The police have been instructed to present a picture of crime and murder every month. You take information from there. You will see what the law and order situation is.”
And if the administration collapsed, would so much have been achieved in the past one year, Shafiqul Alam countered. While giving an account of the achievements, he said, “When Sheikh Hasina fled, the food stock in the country was 1.8 million tons. Now it has increased to 2.1 million tons. For the first time, 4 billion dollars of foreign debt has been repaid. The inflation rate has been brought down to below 10 percent.” The banking situation is improving. Reserves are increasing. Who is doing all this? The bureaucracy has done it. If the bureaucracy had collapsed, it would not have been possible to deal with the six floods.
At that time, another journalist wanted to know, if the police were active, why did the army have to be deployed? Then the press secretary said, the army is deployed during such an interim government.
