Government is not just making statements to stop ‘mobs’, it is also taking action: Environmental Advisor
The environment advisor said this at a view-sharing meeting titled ‘Review of the Media Reform Commission Report’ at a hotel in the capital on Sunday. The meeting was organized by the Broadcast Journalist Center (BJC).
At the time, Syeda Rizwana Hasan commented that objective and accountable media is essential in the national interest. She said, ‘Objective media is a demand of the interim government. The media must create a place of accountability in the national interest.’
Stating that its sustainability will come only when the public’s trust and acceptance of the media increases, the environment advisor said that the media must be objective and accountable in the interest of democracy. At the same time, she highlighted the importance of ethics, responsibility and public trust in the media.
Stating that the government has already formed a committee to implement the recommendations of the Media Reform Commission, Syeda Rizwana Hasan said that this committee has five advisors who are not only reviewing the recommendations of this commission but also various related issues.
The environmental advisor said that the reforms will be sustainable only if they are based on public support, political support and support from the relevant sectors. Sustainability will not come by just making changes on paper. This requires a psychological change.
The environmental advisor said that the government has formed a separate media commission because it views the freedom of the media with great importance. Work is underway to prepare a summary of the recommendations and a roadmap for implementation.
The meeting, chaired by BJC trustee Sayed Ahmed, was also addressed by Sara Hossain, executive director of Bangladesh Legal Aid and Services Trust (BLAST), Ilias Hossain, member secretary of BJC, and Md. Al Mamun, country director of BBC Media Action. BJC executive member Golam Parvez Reza presented the keynote address at the meeting.
