Gazipur Metropolitan BNP completes two years with a committee of two
Although the Gazipur Metropolitan BNP was supposed to form a full committee within 15 days of forming a two-member committee, the full committee has not been formed even after two years. There is anger among the leaders and activists of the Metropolitan BNP for not being able to form a committee for a long time.
Many leaders and activists say that since they have failed to form a full committee, the two-member committee should be dissolved and new ones given responsibility.

Mazharul Islam, a member of the BNP Central Executive Committee, told Prothom Alo, “Two years ago, a committee was formed by announcing the names of the president and secretary. The central committee gave them 15 days to form a full committee. But even after two years, they have failed to form a full committee. This is very sad. Leaders and activists are also disappointed.’

It was learned from talking to BNP leaders and activists that on June 11, 2023, the BNP biennial conference was organized at a convention center in the Telipara area of Gazipur city. A large number of leaders and activists from the city and the district were present. There, BNP leader Shawkat Hossain Sarkar was elected president and M Manjurul Karim alias Rony, son of the late former minister and first mayor of Gazipur City Corporation, was elected general secretary. BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir was the chief guest at that biennial conference. BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman was virtually involved in the conference.
There, three candidates collected nomination papers for the post of president and five for the post of general secretary of Gazipur city BNP. Later, all but two withdrew their nomination papers, and Shawkat Hossain Sarkar was elected president and M Manjurul Karim was elected secretary unopposed. Even after two years, they have not been able to form the metropolitan BNP committee till date.
Rakib Uddin Sarkar, former joint convener of Gazipur Metropolitan BNP, told Prothom Alo that the politics of the metropolis has stagnated due to the inability to form a committee. The politics of the metropolis needs to be made dynamic. The inability to make this dynamic is a major reason for the defeat of the BNP candidates in Gazipur. The two members of the current committee are complete failures.
