The business delegation included former caretaker government advisor and Square Textile Chairman Tapan Chowdhury, ready-made garment industry owners’ organization BGMEA President Mahmud Hasan Khan, knitwear industry owners’ organization BKMEA President Mohammad Hatem, Bangladesh Employers Federation President Fazle Shamim Ehsan, and others. On the other hand, Jamaat-e-Islami’s industry and commerce wing president Shahidul Islam, Secretary General Anwarul Azim, and doctor Khaliduzzaman were present. The meeting was also announced on Jamaat-e-Islami’s Facebook page. Confirming the meeting, Mohammad Hatem told Prothom Alo on Monday, “We have informed the Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer about various issues. Efforts are being made to forcefully amend the labor law. We have informed them of the problems that will arise if that is done. We have also informed them of the challenges that will be faced if the transition from the LDC list is not postponed.’

Mohammad Hatem further said, ‘The labor environment in factories is being disrupted from time to time. We have also sought the cooperation of politicians to protect the interests of workers and industry. The Amir of Jamaat-e-Islami listened to us carefully. He also agreed with us on many issues.’

The Facebook page of Jamaat-e-Islami said that the prospects of Bangladesh’s industry and trade, new investments and their environment, contemporary challenges, especially the Labor Act 2025, were discussed. The industrialists called on all political parties to maintain stability in the country’s industries and provide overall cooperation. In response, the Amir of Jamaat-e-Islami emphasized the importance of improving labor-owner relations to protect the country’s industries and keep the economy running.

Mahmud Hasan Khan, president of the garment industry owners’ organization BGMEA, told Prothom Alo, “This meeting with Jamaat-e-Islami was held as part of a series of discussions with political parties. We have also held meetings with the BNP delegation before. However, the Jamaat Amir had invited us earlier. I could not go then, but I have gone now.” He said that the meeting discussed LDC transition, US counter-tariffs, and labor issues.
