The fire broke out at Gabriel House in Fall River on Sunday night. There were about 70 residents there. Five firefighter personnel were among the injured. They have been released after receiving treatment at the hospital.

In a statement on Monday, Fall River Fire Chief Jeffrey Bacon said, “This is an unimaginable tragedy for the families and residents of the Fall River area. On behalf of the Fall River Fire Department, we extend our deepest condolences to those who are grieving today.”

Firefighters battled smoke and flames to rescue trapped residents. The Massachusetts Fire Department said an investigation is underway to determine the cause of the fire.

Jaren Oldrid told the AP that his 67-year-old father, Steven Oldrid, was taken to the hospital after smoke inhalation. “It’s just all of a sudden, everything’s gone haywire,” he said. “We’re just trying to figure out what’s going on and how this happened.”

About 50 firefighters were on scene, about 30 of whom were on leave.

Fire Chief Bacon said some residents of the nursing home were leaning out of windows at the time of the fire, calling for help.

Massachusetts Governor Maura Healy expressed her condolences to the victims in a statement yesterday. She promised to provide all possible assistance from state authorities in the incident.

Healy said, “There’s a full investigation underway. I know the people of Fall River are brave and strong. This is a time for everyone to come together and help each other in this tragic situation.”
