Elections in February before Ramadan

Chief Advisor Professor Muhammad Yunus said this in his address to the nation today, Tuesday. The Chief Advisor addressed the nation at 8:20 pm on the first anniversary of the July Uprising. The Chief Advisor’s speech was broadcast simultaneously by Bangladesh Television, BTV News and Bangladesh Betar. Earlier this afternoon, he read the July Declaration in the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban area. He read the declaration at the South Plaza of the Jatiya Sangsad. The Chief Advisor mentioned in his speech that reforms, justice and holding national elections are the three main tasks of the interim government. He said, ‘This is our turn to fulfill our last duty. Holding elections. Today, on this great day, after delivering this speech before you, we will enter our last and most important chapter. We will now begin the process of handing over responsibility to an elected government.’

Professor Muhammad Yunus said, ‘On behalf of the interim government, I will send a letter to the Chief Election Commissioner, so that the Election Commission organizes national elections before the next Ramadan, in February 2026.’

The Sheikh Hasina government fell on August 5 last year in the face of a student-public uprising. This ended the nearly 16-year rule of the Awami League. Three days later, since the interim government was formed under the leadership of Professor Muhammad Yunus, various political parties, including the BNP, had been demanding the organization of elections. When the political arena heated up over the movement and agenda demanding elections, Professor Muhammad Yunus went to London and met with BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman. After that meeting on June 13, a joint statement said that the government would organize national elections between February and April 2026. Then, today, on the anniversary of the July Uprising, the Chief Advisor said that the elections will be held in the first half of February, before the start of Ramadan.

The Chief Advisor seeks everyone’s prayers so that all the citizens of this country can successfully move forward in the work of building a ‘New Bangladesh’ by conducting the elections in a beautiful manner. He mentioned that the government will provide all kinds of help and cooperation so that this election can be conducted in a fair, peaceful and festive manner.

The Chief Advisor announced that mental preparation and institutional arrangements will start from tomorrow to complete all the arrangements so that this election is memorable in the history of the country in terms of joy and celebration, peace and order, voter turnout, harmony and sincerity.

Professor Yunus said, ‘Citizens have not been able to vote for the last 15 years due to the deprivation of the voting rights of the people of the country. We want to vote in this election with great joy along with our pending joy. Voters who will be voting for the first time in this election will go to the polling station with various festivities to make this day memorable. Among them, there will be new female voters, new male voters. Among them, there will be voters who could have voted 15 years ago, but could not vote even once in their lives. Among them, there will be those who could have voted 10 years ago, 5 years ago, but could not. And there will be a group of lucky men and women, who qualified to become voters for the first time and got the opportunity to vote immediately.’

The chief advisor mentioned that he wants to make the election day like an Eid festival. He said, ‘This time, everyone will be happy about the election. You will all go to the polling station with your children.’

‘The defeat of evil forces will be final’

The chief advisor mentioned that flawed elections were behind all the major conflicts and incidents of violence that have occurred in the country’s history so far. He said, the July coup has shown what the ultimate consequences are if a party is elected by force through flawed elections.

‘We do not want to repeat a tainted chapter of history,’ said the chief advisor.

The chief advisor commented that a group is eager to disrupt the elections. He said, ‘They are sitting outside the country and engaging in various evil attempts from within to disrupt the democratic progress of the country.’

Warning everyone in this regard, Professor Muhammad Yunus said, ‘We must be careful that they do not get any opportunity to make the elections controversial. Keep in mind, the defeated forces will try to rise up again and again until the elections. But if a free, fair and impartial election is successfully organized, the defeat of the evil forces will be final.’ make some bangla tags and easy to paste
