The Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) has sought this information from the EC in the wake of a case filed at the capital’s Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station on June 22 regarding irregularities in the elections. The EC is collecting this information from the field to provide it to the PBI. Election Commission sources said that the PBI has written to the EC seeking detailed information on the returning officers, presiding officers, assistant presiding officers and polling officers who were in charge of these three elections.

The letter requests the officials to provide their names, addresses, father’s name, mother’s name, permanent/current address, national identity card, passport number, mobile number and polling station-based information.

In view of this, the EC wrote to the divisional commissioners and DCs on Sunday to send this information to the EC secretariat.

In the national elections, 64 DCs and Dhaka and Chittagong divisional commissioners perform the duties of returning officers. And Upazila Executive Officers (UNOs) perform the duties of assistant returning officers. However, the letter did not mention the matter of assistant returning officers.

Apart from this, district and upazila election officers are also responsible for voting. About two lakh polling officers, including presiding, assistant presiding and polling officers, perform the duties.
