Four headless bodies were found on the side of a road near the state capital, Culiacan, the Sinaloa prosecutor’s office said in a statement on Monday. Sixteen more bodies were found in an abandoned car, along with five human heads in a bag.
Police say a note was left next to the bodies, believed to have been written by a drug gang. The contents of the note were not immediately available.
Local officials believe it is part of an internal conflict between powerful drug gangs in Sinaloa, which is considered one of Mexico’s most violent regions.
Sinaloa government spokesman Feliciano Castro condemned the killings, saying it was necessary to review the government’s strategy to combat organized crime, given the level of violence being seen.
