Jamaat’s Dinajpur District Working Committee member Alamgir Hossain confirmed the matter to Prothom Alo. He said that Sheikh Raju submitted the associate member form to Abdur Rahman, secretary of Ward No. 2 branch of Jamaat’s Ghoraghat Municipality. He has been associated with Ghoraghat Upazila JPA politics for a long time. He took charge as the general secretary of the upazila branch in 2018. However, after the July-August agitation last year, he was somewhat cornered by the political upheaval. Then, on December 28, he submitted his resignation to Ghoraghat Upazila JPA president Arifuzzaman Rana, citing personal reasons.

A leader has resigned from Jatiya Party (JPA) in Ghoraghat, Dinajpur and joined Jamaat-e-Islami. Sheikh Raju Ahmed, former general secretary of Ghoraghat Upazila JPA, officially joined the party by filling out the associate member form of Jamaat on Friday evening.
Jamaat’s Dinajpur District Working Committee member Alamgir Hossain confirmed the matter to Prothom Alo. He said, Sheikh Raju submitted the associate member form to Abdur Rahman, secretary of Ward No. 2 branch of Jamaat’s Ghoraghat Municipality. He has been associated with the politics of Ghoraghat Upazila Japa for a long time. In 2018, he took charge as the general secretary of the upazila branch. However, after the July-August movement last year, he was somewhat cornered by the changes in politics. Then, on December 28, he submitted his resignation to Ghoraghat Upazila Japa President Arifuzzaman Rana, citing personal reasons.
After joining Jamaat, Sheikh Raju wrote in a post on social media Facebook on Friday evening, ‘Alhamdulillah, I am proud to have joined the Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami party today. Everyone please pray.’
In this regard, Sheikh Raju Ahmed told Prothom Alo, ‘The National Party is not able to function independently now. The work that GM Quader is doing is not the previous Japa. I like the activities and organization of Jamaat. I did not want any position or title, I am only an associate member. I was already reluctant towards BNP or Awami League. I don’t like their politics. I joined the party through my friend Jamaat leader Abdur Rahman.’
Mofakhkhayer Islam Molla, the Amir of Jamaat-e-Islami’s Ghoraghat Upazila branch, said, “It is true that Sheikh Raju Ahmed has become a member; but he does not know how he became a member. Such an important leader of the Jatiya Party at the police station level has no opportunity to join Jamaat like this.”
