Many analyst have raised the question, why didn’t Ishraq Hossain wait until the next election?’ Photo: Prothom Alo
Discussions are ongoing about who lost and who won the discussion between Professor Yunus and Tarique Rahman in London. Among the political leaders, those who were Yunus’s devotees for so long have now come out to criticize him. BNP made a lot of noise by accusing Yunus of conspiring to rig the election, and now their role has also changed. Bichitra Seleucus, how strange our politics is, everything changed in one day!
Many political analysts and journalists have ruled that BNP won the London meeting. The matter can also be seen in another way. Professor Yunus wanted the election to be held in April 2026. He announced that the election would be brought forward by two months. Tarique Rahman wanted the election in December this year. He accepted February 2026. So both sides have given a two-month reprieve.

Discussions are ongoing about who lost and who won the discussion between Professor Yunus and Tarique Rahman in London. Among the political leaders, those who were Yunus’ devotees for so long have now come out to criticize him. BNP has made a lot of noise by accusing Yunus of a conspiracy regarding the elections, and now their role has also changed. Bichitra Seleucus, how strange our politics is, everything changed in one day!
Many political analysts and journalists have ruled that BNP won the London meeting. The matter can also be seen in another way. Professor Yunus wanted the elections to be held in April 2026. He announced to bring the elections forward by two months. Tarique Rahman wanted the elections in December this year. He accepted February 2026. So both sides have given two months each.
Professor Yunus has been relieved of some pressure from those who were skeptical about his promises regarding the elections and those who saw a conspiracy regarding the election date. This can be seen as an achievement of Professor Yunus. On the other hand, Tarique Rahman also has a big achievement. For the first time, the people saw him on a larger and higher-profile stage outside the BNP party video screen with Dr. Yunus. All things considered, no one lost in this meeting and both sides gained equally.
Now some political parties feel that Professor Yunus has violated neutrality by raising the profile of BNP and Tarique Rahman at their expense. Political parties including Jamaat-e-Islami and NCP, which had supported Professor Yunus on the election date and reforms for so long, are quite disappointed. Because, by meeting Tarique Rahman with so much fanfare in London and bringing forward the election date at the request of BNP, Professor Yunus has given BNP a lot of energy. BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam said that this is a ‘turning point’.
Within 24 hours of the meeting and agreement between Professor Yunus and Tarique Rahman, Bangladesh’s electoral politics have taken a breather. The parties are starting their election activities.
