Dhaka Medical College to reopen on July 12 after being closed for nearly 20 days
This decision was taken in an emergency meeting of the Academic Council of Dhaka Medical College last Tuesday. On Wednesday, Principal Professor Md. Kamrul Alam confirmed this information to Prothom Alo.
According to the decision of the Academic Council, classes will begin at Dhaka Medical College from Saturday, July 12. And all residential halls will be opened from the morning of July 11.
Professor Kamrul Alam said, “We closed the classes and halls to ensure the safety of students and to vacate risky buildings. We were able to do that. We agree with all the demands of the students, including the construction of new dormitories and academic buildings. However, they have to be done through a long-term process. Students are also realizing the issue and want to return to classes. As a result, we are going to start the residential halls from July 11 and classes from July 12.” Dhaka Medical College students have been boycotting classes since May with five demands, including ensuring safe housing facilities. In this situation, the authorities announced an indefinite closure of the college and residential halls in a press release on June 21.
The students had five demands—fast-track passage of the budget for the hostels and girls’ dormitories, provision of alternative housing until new housing is available, separate budget allocation for both new and alternative housing, declaration of old academic buildings as risky and abandoned, and appointment of student representatives to ensure progress and transparency of activities during the movement.
