Deal with India will be done soon: Donald Trump
According to the Economic Times, citing a Bloomberg report, India wants to get more competitive advantages over its neighboring countries and therefore is seeking lower tariff rates than Indonesia. The United States recently signed a trade deal with Indonesia. Where the tariff rate is set at 19, it is expected to be below 20 percent in the case of India.
Regarding the agreement with Indonesia, Trump said, “They are giving us access to the Indonesian market, which we did not have before. That is probably the most important aspect… India is also moving in the same direction.”
Trump also said, “We are now going to enter the Indian market. You have to understand, we did not have access to these countries before. Our people could not have gone. Now we are getting that opportunity by changing the tariff policy….’
Last week, Trump also hinted that a trade deal between India and the US was almost at the final stage. Indian Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal said earlier this week, ‘Talks are progressing rapidly.’
India has so far been adamant about giving the US tariff exemptions on agricultural and dairy products. These two sectors are very sensitive for India. India has protected its dairy industry in every trade negotiation in the past. As a result, the possibility of these two sectors being included in any possible mini or interim agreement is low.

India has protected its dairy industry in every trade negotiation in the past. As a result, the two sectors are unlikely to be included in any possible mini or interim agreement.
However, there is still a dispute over the US tariffs on steel, aluminum (50%) and car imports (25%). India has also filed separate complaints with the World Trade Organization on these issues.
Meanwhile, the Trump administration has been sending one ‘tariff letter’ after another since last week. The date of implementation of the counter-tariffs has been postponed from July 9 to August 1. Despite this, the US has already sent separate letters to more than 20 countries informing them of the applicable tariff rates on their exports. However, India has not received any such letter so far.
According to the Office of the United States Trade Representative, total merchandise trade between the United States and India in 2024 was approximately $129.2 billion. Of this, the United States exported goods worth $41.8 billion to India, an increase of 3.4 percent, or $1.4 billion, compared to 2023.
