Concord has become a trusted brand in the housing sector

The Concord Group has completed 50 years of its journey. The country’s tallest and most beautiful buildings were built by Concord. How did it start?

Shahriar Kamal: In 1973, our chairman SM Kamaluddin started the journey of Concord with just four employees. His main capital was intelligence and confidence. He left his job and entered the business with the desire to do something for the people of the country. Concord’s first journey began with the work of rebuilding bridges in war-torn countries. After that, we have built numerous important and beautiful structures including the National Memorial, Dhaka International Airport, IDB Building, Mirpur Indoor Stadium, Concord Police Plaza. Even the Singtel Tower in Singapore was built by Concord. In the last 50 years, Concord has completed more than 1,200 projects, including residential and commercial.

Currently, Concord has become a trusted brand in the country’s housing sector. Many companies have come and gone in the last 50 years; but Concord has always maintained sustainable growth, without seeing major ups and downs. Getting big suddenly is not our goal. Our chairman has emphasized honesty, integrity and good governance from the beginning. He has taught us that it takes a long time to earn people’s trust; but it doesn’t take even five minutes to lose it. So before taking up any project, we think about a lot, which is why we don’t get many complaints from customers.

Prothom Alo: Concord Group, a housing sector company, has completed 50 years of its journey. The country’s tall and beautiful buildings began with Concord. How did it start?

In the current situation, people are looking for a reliable housing developer, where their investment will be safe. We think this situation has created an opportunity for us.

Shahriar Kamal, Managing Director, Concord Group

Prothom Alo:

Prothom Alo: How big has Concord Group become in the last 50 years. And in what sectors has it expanded its business?

Shahriar Kamal: Any business will come to a standstill if it cannot keep pace with the times. We started with building construction and later built multi-storey buildings. Then we completed big projects like airports and indoor stadiums. That’s when we realized that building on land can be a profitable business. As a result, we built the first apartment building in Banglamotor and Gulshan. Then we built the first commercial building in Gulshan around 1978-79, when everyone said that no one would leave Motijheel and open an office in Gulshan.

Our chairman’s instructions were that the business should not be limited to a specific sector. So, in addition to luxury projects, we also did projects like Lake City for low-income people. At the same time, we also focused on sustainable construction. We are losing 1 percent of agricultural land every year due to terracotta bricks. Knowing this, since 2000, we have started producing environmentally friendly bricks and using them in all our projects. Now the government is also using these bricks in all its projects. Then we built theme parks thinking of healthy entertainment. Currently, we have eight parks, go-carts and hotels in Dhaka and Chittagong. In addition, we have expanded our business into various construction-related sectors. However, about 50-60 percent of our business is still focused on the housing sector.
