An order in this regard was issued on Tuesday night. It was signed by IRD Secretary and National Board of Revenue (NBR) Chairman Abdur Rahman Khan. This Wednesday morning, Commissioner of the Customs Bond Commissionerate of Chittagong, Mohammad Shafi Uddin, was given the responsibility of the Chittagong Customs House Commissioner.
On June 28 and 29, customs and tax officials and employees under the banner of the NBR Reform Unity Council held a complete shutdown program to demand rational reforms in the revenue sector. This resulted in the closure of customs and tax offices across the country, including the Chittagong Customs House.
The order for temporary suspension of Md. Zakir Hossain states that Md. Zakir Hossain was temporarily suspended from service after being investigated for obstructing import and export activities and causing a huge loss of revenue to the government by keeping the customs house in Chittagong open by disobeying the instructions to keep the office open. After investigation, he was appointed as an officer on special duty at the National Board of Revenue (NBR) as per departmental procedures. During the temporary suspension, he will be entitled to food allowance as per the rules.
Chittagong Customs House is the largest revenue-collecting department of the NBR. About 75 thousand crore taka was collected under this department in the outgoing fiscal year (2024-25).
In addition, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) is investigating 11 officials of the NBR. Among them are two members of the NBR. In addition, Hasan Muhammad Tarek Rikabder, the president of the NBR Reform Unity Council, is also involved.
