China does not want to see Russia lose in the war with Ukraine. Beijing fears that if Moscow loses in the war, the United States’ attention will be completely focused on China. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi conveyed his country’s position to European Union (EU) foreign policy chief Kaja Kalas.
Kaja Kalas and Wang Yi held a four-hour meeting in the Belgian capital Brussels on Wednesday. During this, the Chinese foreign minister made this remark about Russia. Officials involved in the meeting said that the two top diplomats discussed various issues including cybersecurity, rare earth minerals, trade imbalances, Taiwan, and the Middle East during the meeting.
The officials said that Wang Yi’s comments to Kaja Kalas personally about the Russia-Ukraine war seemed to indicate that Beijing wants the war to continue for a longer period. In this way, the United States will focus on that war instead of its rival China. Although Beijing has always said that it will remain neutral in the Russia-Ukraine war.
After Wednesday’s meeting, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Mao Ning held a press briefing on Friday. There, he also emphasized Beijing’s neutrality in the Russia-Ukraine war. Asked about the meeting between Kalas and Wang Yi at the briefing, Mao Ning said that China is not a party to the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Beijing’s position on the crisis is in favor of dialogue, ceasefire and peace.
A few weeks before Russia’s operation in Ukraine began in February 2022, Chinese President Xi Jinping said that Beijing’s partnership with Moscow had “no boundaries”. Since the start of the war, political and economic relations between the two countries have also become stronger than ever.
China has also been accused of supplying weapons to Russia in its fight against Ukrainian forces. After Russia’s massive attack on Kiev on Friday, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Tsibiha posted a photo of the wreckage of a ‘Geran-2’ drone on social media. The structure of the drone launched by Russia on June 20 is alleged to have been manufactured in China.
