Chief advisor did not say he will resign, others are staying: Planning advisor

The chief advisor to the interim government, Dr. Muhammad Yunus, will not resign. He did not say that he will resign. This was stated by Planning Advisor Wahiduddin Mahmud.

Planning Advisor Wahiduddin Mahmud told reporters after an unscheduled closed-door meeting of the advisory council after the meeting of the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) today, Saturday.

He said, ‘The chief advisor is not leaving, he is staying with us. He did not say that he will resign, he will definitely stay. Other advisors are also staying. The responsibility entrusted to us is a big responsibility, we have come to fulfill that responsibility. We cannot leave this responsibility.’

A meeting of the advisory council was held at the conference room of the National Economic Council (NEC) in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in the capital at around 12:20 pm today under the chairmanship of Chief Advisor Professor Muhammad Yunus. Other advisors of the interim government were present at the meeting. The meeting ended at around 2:20 pm. The planning advisor told reporters after the meeting.

Amidst the political unrest that has been going on for several days, the members of the advisory council of the interim government held a closed-door meeting on Saturday afternoon.

Earlier, last Thursday, the chief advisor of the interim government, Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus, met with him amid rumors of his resignation. That evening, he went to the chief advisor’s residence at the State Guest House Jamuna and met him. At that time, he said that the chief advisor was ‘thinking about resigning.’

After the meeting, Nahid Islam told the BBC that Nahid told the BBC, ‘The current situation in the country, we have been hearing news of sir’s resignation since this morning. So I went to meet sir to discuss that issue.’

Nahid said that the chief advisor expressed his fear that he would not be able to work in the current situation in the country. Nahid said, “Sir, you are saying, ‘If I cannot work… from where you brought me after a mass uprising. The country is changing, the reforms…. . . But the situation, the way the movement is or the way I am being held hostage. I cannot work like this. If the political parties, all of you, cannot reach a common ground, a common ground.'”

At that time, Nahid also said that he requested the chief advisor not to resign.
