California governor files defamation lawsuit against Fox News

California Governor Gavin Newsom has filed a $787 million defamation lawsuit against Fox News, alleging that the network misrepresented a phone call he had with President Donald Trump earlier this month during anti-immigration protests in Los Angeles.

The lawsuit was filed in Delaware Superior Court on Friday.

The phone call between Newsom and Trump took place on the night of June 6, local time. The call came shortly after anti-immigration protests erupted in Los Angeles. Less than 24 hours after the call, Trump bypassed the California governor’s office and deployed 700 National Guard and Marines to the state.

In an interview with NBC News on June 8, Newsom claimed that his phone call with Trump was peaceful and courteous. But the issue of sending the National Guard never came up in that conversation.

Newsom said, “I was trying to talk about Los Angeles, but the president kept bringing up other things. He never once mentioned the National Guard.”

Newsom claimed he did not speak to Trump after that call. However, on June 10, Trump told reporters that he had spoken to the governor the day before.

Newsom claims Trump’s statement is false and misleading

The lawsuit alleges that Fox News tried to make Newsom, a political opponent, out of a lie by covering up Trump’s false and misleading statements. The channel spread false information about the last time he spoke to the president during a national crisis.

The lawsuit documents say Fox News intentionally aired a misleading video clip and multiple false statements to portray Newsom as a liar.

Fox News host Jesse Waters said on his Jesse Waters Primetime show on June 10, “Why did Newsom lie and claim that Trump did not speak to him on the phone?”
